Some people become part of a business, and some people help shape it. Emma has certainly done the latter.
Having been with VeryPC for 18 years, Emma’s journey is a fantastic example of what can be achieved through hard work, determination and a willingness to learn. Starting her career with us in an administrative role, she has progressed through the business, developing her knowledge and skills every step of the way to become our Financial Controller and lead a finance team of four.
Emma’s success hasn’t happened overnight. Through years of dedication and commitment, she’s earned the trust and respect of colleagues across the business. Along the way, VeryPC has proudly invested in her professional development, supporting her with financial and accountancy training, as well as providing experienced mentors to help her grow into the leader she is today.
But Emma’s role extends far beyond finance. She also oversees all aspects of HR at VeryPC, making her one of the busiest people in the business. From supporting colleagues and managing day-to-day financial operations to helping shape our workplace culture, Emma somehow manages it all with professionalism, organisation and a smile.
As one of our trained Mental Health First Aiders, certified by St John Ambulance, Emma is always willing to lend an ear or offer support whenever it’s needed. She’s someone people naturally turn to, whether it’s for advice, reassurance or simply a friendly chat.
Outside of her day job, Emma is a huge part of the VeryPC culture. You’ll rarely find a company social event without her there, bringing plenty of laughs and making sure everyone feels welcome and included. Her positive energy is infectious, and she’s one of those people who can make any occasion more enjoyable.
Away from the office, Emma is a proud dog parent to Cooper, a loyal Sheffield United supporter and enjoys relaxing with a well-earned cider. Whether she’s celebrating with colleagues, cheering on the Blades or spending time with friends and family, one thing’s for certain – you’re always guaranteed a good time when Emma’s around.
Emma’s story is one we’re incredibly proud of. It reflects not only her own commitment and ambition but also VeryPC’s belief in investing in people, recognising potential and creating opportunities for long-term careers.
We caught up with Emma for a quick Q&A to find out more about her journey, what she enjoys most about working at VeryPC and life outside the office.
Q&A with Emma
Q: How long have you been with VeryPC? and what was your very first role when you joined the company?
A: I started at VeryPC on 17th September 2008, so I’ve been here for just over 18 years! All I ever aspired to be was a receptionist, so at 17 I joined as a Business Administrator, when there were only around 10 members of staff. Andy and Ed are the only people from back then who are still here.
Q: What does a typical day look like for you?
A: A typical weekday starts with morning snuggles with Cooper, accompanied by a much-needed coffee! I then log on, update the cashflow, before getting to the highlight of my morning – catching up with the girls. There’s always plenty of chit-chat, a good giggle and usually a bit of putting the world to rights! It’s also a chance for them to ask any questions, and for me to make sure everyone is feeling motivated and set up for the day ahead. After that, anything goes! My role is really varied, and depending on the time of the month, no two days are ever quite the same.
Q: What’s your favorite memory from your time at VeryPC?
A: Ooo, this is difficult! There have been so many great memories just this year, never mind of all time. One of my favourites is an oldie: back when we were a smaller business, we turned the Technology Suite into a karaoke room for our Christmas party. We drank cans of beer, and wine from plastic cups and I think we were provided with Pizza! We didn’t have much money back then, but we made do and had the best time. It’s a raw memory of harder times but we had to muddle through the hard times to get to where we are today.
Q: As Head of HR, you’re passionate about supporting our people. How does your role as a Mental Health First Aider complement that?
A: People are my thing. I genuinely care about people and want them to be happy and succeed. My role as a Mental Health First Aider has given me the tools to support the team in ways I never imagined. The course taught me a lot about adapting to different people and situations, which I believe is a priceless skill. I’m grateful to VeryPC for being open-minded and allowing us to explore and learn how to support people in the best possible way.
Q: What does working for VeryPC mean to you?
A: Everything – I think working here for 18 years speaks for itself. It’s the people, the culture and the challenge! No day is ever the same! Over the years, the directors have also become good friends of mine, and I couldn’t imagine working for anyone else. I’m proud to be part of what VeryPC is and what we can become.
Q: What’s the best thing or place you’ve crossed off your bucket list?
A: For me, it had to be the road trip with my husband along the West Coast. San Fransico > Yosemite > LA > San Diego > Las Vegas – Best trip of my life to date!
Q: If you could swap jobs with anyone at VeryPC for a day, who would it be and why?
A: Nobody, I love my job and couldn’t imagine doing anything else! But if I had to pick, maybe Marketing to do some photography and learn skills around editing photos etc. as it’s something I used to have a passion for.
Q: If you could only take three items with you to a desert island, what would they be and why?
A: My Husband & Dog for snuggles, company and security and a multi-use pocketknife!
Q: What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? What’s your perfect weekend plans?
A: My perfect weekend would be:
Friday – A quiet evening watching trash TV with my husband and Cooper after cooking a nice homemade meal (or having one made for me)
Saturday – Going to Bramall Lane to watch the Blades Get a Big Win , followed by meeting friends for drinks and putting the world to rights.
Sunday – Nice lie in, followed by a long walk with my Husband & Cooper followed by either dinner at the pub or a cheeky take away!
Q: What would your theme song or walk-on song be?
“Let’s get down to Business” by Tiesto!
